At the moment SSD is undoubtedly an ideal device to run Windows and programs requiring speed since it is much faster than traditional HDD. Therefore, more and more people who are seeking for speed plan to upgrade their HDD to SSD or run Windows and programs on SSD at least. After all, SSD is small in capacity and high in price. For example, they can cost $90 to buy a 250GB internal SSD on Amazon and only run Windows and programs strictly requiring speed on it.
Best Tips to Have Best SSD Performance in Windows :
Have you kindly upgraded your HDD to SSD? If yes, keep reading this post, I will show you some tips, which could help you save much time and get the best performance from SSD.
Tip 1: Migrate Windows and Installed Programs or Upgrade HDD to SSD Using Freeware
Highly suggest transferring Windows and installed programs to SSD or clone HDD to SSD, which could help you avoid reinstallation. If you are beginner and would like to get an easy-friendly yet rich with features for transfer OS, you can’t go wrong with MiniTool partition wizard.
Here are detailed steps.
Step 1: Download and install MiniTool Partition Wizard, and then launch the program to get its interface:
Step 2: choose “Migrate OS to SSD/HD Wizard” if you wondering to transfer OS and installed programs to SSD only. But clone the entire HDD to SSD, directly select the HDD and choose “Copy Disk”. Here, I take transferring Windows to SSD for example.
Step 3: select the SSD to migrate Windows to and click “Next”.
Step 4: choose a copying method and click “Next”.
Step 5: click “Finish” button to continue.
Step 6: click “Apply” button to apply all changes.

Then, let’s talk about tips for optimizing SSD.
Tip 2: Align Partitions
After migrating Windows or cloning HDD to SSD, you’d better try aligning partitions, because cloned partitions are easy to be misaligned though newly created partitions are always aligned. With misaligned partitions, Windows and programs will run slow. In addition, read-write speed will be reduced, too.
Detailed operations are as follows.
Firstly, launch MiniTool Partition Wizard again and get the interface:
Then, select the SSD and choose “Align All Partitions” feature. If the program detects there are misaligned partitions, it will tell you how many partitions should be aligned and make all operations as pending operations. At this time, as long as you click “Apply” button, it will align all misaligned partitions automatically.
Tip 3: Enable AHCI Mode in BIOS
With enabling this feature, you can get faster data transfer rate compared with using IDE mode. To enable this feature, please do like this:
Firstly, press a required key to enter BIOS. If you do not know which key to press, just search on the internet.
Secondly, set SATA type or mode to AHCI.
However, if you get a blue screen and Windows won’t boot after enabling ACHI, please fix it as follow:
Change AHCI back to IDE or RAID in BOIS, after which Windows would be bootable again.
Then, start Regedit.exe and navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\msahci
Next, change the value data of “Start” to 0 and click “OK“.
After that, you can quit from regedit.exe, restart computer, enter BOIS, and enable AHCI again. Then, Windows should boot successfully.
Tip 4: Enlarge C Drive
C drive should have 10% free space at least, which is good for further increasing computer running speed. If Windows Disk Management utility doesn’t allow you to enlarge drive C, for example the Extend Volume feature is grayed out, turn to MiniTool Partition Wizard which could take free space from any existing partition or unallocated space on the same disk to extend C.
Then, take free space from other partitions or unallocated space to take free space and drag sliding handle to decide the free space that will be taken to enlarge C.
At last, click “Apply” to make this change performed.
Tip 5: Don’t Defrag Your SSD
Just like a USB flash drive, SSD can read data very quickly compared with HDD which needs to look for requested data. Therefore, there is no need to gather all file fragments together. Defragging doesn’t improve performance, and on the contrary, it generates many unnecessary writes, which will affect SSD lifetime to some extent.
Tip 6: Enable Write Caching
Both HDD and SSD users had better enable write caching. With write caching enabled, high-speed volatile memory will be used to collect and cache write commands sent to the disk drive, which could improve computer performance to some extent.
How to Enable Write Caching:
Go to Device Manager, expand Disk Drives, right click the SSD, choose Properties, and check the option “Enable write caching on the device” under Policies tab.
