The Government of India has made some major changes to the framework of satellite connectivity in India and big updates on satellite internet. So let’s get into the article to check out the new piece of information.
It has been officially revealed that the Digital Communications Commission (DCC) has approved most of TRAI’s recommendations for how satellite internet companies will get spectrum in the country.
The new approval will be bringing major satellite internet players closer to launch their services in India. We have players including
→ Starlink
→ Eutelsat OneWeb
→ Jio Satellite
→ Amazon Leo
It is worth mentioning that the satellite spectrum will not be auctioned but the government will assign it directly to operators. The operators have to make the payment of 5% of annual Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) as spectrum charges along with 4% for services in rural and remote areas and the spectrum will be assigned for 5 years, with a possible 2-year extension.
Having said that, there are many more steps involved before the commercial services can launch, including finalizing spectrum pricing and completing the remaining approvals. Moreover, Starlink and Amazon Leo also need FDI clearance.
Talking about the satellite market in India, the satellite broadband market in India was around $3.2B in 2025 and is expected to reach $6.3B by 2034. So let’s wait for further updates and the most important point is, of course, the pricing.
