The 22 year old legendary video calling platform Skype is going to be shut down in the next two months as Microsoft has officially announced to shut down the service. This is the end of an era, and Skype is the first platform for many of us to experience video calling.
Microsoft has officially confirmed to shut down Skype on May 5 this year, and the application will start notifying users to shift to the Microsoft Teams, and they can be able to use the login details of Skype on Microsoft Teams.
Having said that, the company already shut down the Skype for Business on July 31, 2021. Now the company is finally shutting down the consumer version.
Let’s look back to the journey of Skype
Skype was launched in 2003 by a group of four developers and then the platform received the capability of video calling in 2006. Skype received a huge attention and the platform reached the milestone of 300 million active users by 2010.
Finally, the tech giant Microsoft acquired Skype in 2011. Microsoft then integrated Skype with Windows and other enterprise products. At one time, Google also failed to counter Skype with its Hangouts. However, during the time of corona virus, the attention slowly moved towards Zoom and Google Meet in favour of better UI, ease of usage, and video quality.
That created problems with Skype and people started to ignore the video calling platform. So now Microsoft has finally decided to hang up the video calling platform.
So thank you so much Skype for all the beautiful memories and also to offer the video calling experience in childhood.
