While flying from one place to another, we face the connectivity problem as we don’t get mobile internet or Wi-Fi connectivity on the board. However, this has now changed in India. Domestic flights can now offer Wi-Fi connectivity and this will be helping travelers to get connected with their friends and family or business clients. It is worth mentioning that the internal services were limited to International routes earlier. So let’s get into the article to learn more about the Wi-Fi connectivity in domestic flights.
For those who are not aware, the Government of India enforced a rule in 2018 that restricted Airlines to provide internet while flying above 3000 metres as the flights in India fly between 8000 and 11000 metres. The reason behind this rule was to prevent interference in communication between the flight and the Air Traffic Control (ATC). This is actually meant to provide the best safety to the passengers.
But the modern technology has improved the situation and there is minimal effect on the safety of the flight. So now the government has released a new notification and announced some amendments to the rule. Under the new regulations, Airlines can now provide internet service while flying. It is worth mentioning that the new amendment is not a forced rule and the final decision is at the officials of airlines as they might need to adopt the new technology to overcome the technology challenges.
It is worth mentioning that the Wi-Fi connectivity in flight requires modifications to the aircraft. The companies need to setup additional Antennas and modems to obtain connectivity either from satellites or ground stations. These implementations required huge investments and that could lead to a price hike on the airline tickets for the new internet services, if aircraft players decide to implement the new changes on the board.
Having said that, Vistara which is merged with Air India is the only Indian Airline that provides internet services on the board and the same is available on its International routes. This service is available for free of cost for 20 minutes and after that, passengers need to make a payment to access the internet while flying. So let’s wait and see how flight operators will respond to the new rule and when will they start offering internet services while flying. Don’t forget to share your thoughts about the new announcement of the government in the comments section below and stick with us for more updates from the world of technology.
