According to a report by MediaName, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs calls on the Indian government to ban VPN services in the country. The committee noted that virtual private network (VPN) services pose a threat to cyber threats and other malicious activities.
According to the report, the committee explained that ban VPN services should be in India because they are readily available online, which allows “criminals to remain anonymous online”.
For those who do not know, most companies in India use VPN services to protect their networks and digital assets from hackers. In addition, VPN devices are becoming more important during lockdowns when employees are forced to work from home with an insecure home internet connection. Although VPN services allow Internet users to access restricted content in the country and remain “anonymous” to a certain extent online, the benefits of VPNs to companies over networks are enormous. The panel recommended “testing the use of VPNs and the Dark Web”.
According to MediaName, the committee recommended a permanent ban VPN services “with the help of Internet service providers” across India. “The Committee is concerned about the technical challenge posed by VPN services and the Dark Web, which allow criminals to remain anonymous online, bypassing cyber security walls. To date, VPNs can be easily downloaded because many Web sites provide such features and advertise them. The Committee recommends the Ministry of Home Affairs coordinate with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to identify and permanently block such VPNs with the assistance of ISPs.”
Committee also suggested that a coordination mechanism be developed with international agencies to ensure that these VPNs are permanently blocked. The committee wants the ministry to take the initiative to strengthen the tracks and surveillance system by further improving and developing state-of-the-art technology to test the use of VPN and Dark web”.
