Qualcomm Introduces Quick Charge 3+ for Budget Smartphones

After the crazy run behind thinner bezels, display resolution and camera megapixel count seem like smartphone manufacturers have started focusing on charging speeds. They are busy developing 100 Watts and beyond for smartphones. We have seen Oppo put a 65 Watt charger in the box too. Now its Qualcomm’s turn.

Usually, fast charging solutions are developed for flagship phones, and budget phones have to wait for their turn to get a taste of this much power. But Qualcomm wants to change that. They have introduced Qualcomm Quick Charge 3+ which is aimed at budget smartphones powered by Snapdragon 765 and below. This was at a time when users where expecting a sequel to Quick Charge 4+. As per the company, the new charging tech will bring “advanced charging at a lower price point.” 

The first phone to come with this feature is the Xiaomi Mi 10 Youth which was unveiled yesterday. The phone runs of Snapdragon 765, and interestingly enough it supports Quick Charge 4+ too. 

Quick Charge 3+ Features

• Fast-Charging and Improved efficiency: The technology allows users to charge from flat 0% to 50% in 15 minutes. It’s 35% more efficient than the previous generation and 9 ºC cooler.
• Support for USB Type-A to Type-C cable and accessories
• Backward compatibility with previous-generation Quick-Charge devices.
• Integrated cable power capability or identification
• Support for new PMICs such as SMB1395/SMB1396. They’ll bring massive advantages such as eliminating the need for external components an overvoltage protection chip and a sense resistor.

The advantage of this standard from Qualcomm is the universal compatibility. You can charge a phone that supports Quick Charge 4 with any charger that supports the standard by Qualcomm. Since Qualcomm is responsible for making smartphone chipsets their standards are widely accepted. In contrast, if you have an Oppo or OnePlus phone with fast charging, you need the charger supplied to charge fast. Their fast charging technology is proprietary and is not compatible with other chargers.
