Mobile World Congress 2018 will be starting off in a few days, Qualcomm has gone ahead and revealed a new artificial intelligence (AI) engine. The Qualcomm Artificial Intelligence (AI) Engine consists of several hardware and software components that can be used, by app developers, to provide “AI-powered user experiences”, with or without a network connection.
The AI engine is more of a background player, you’ll likely see improvements on your mobile device wherever the engine is implemented. Qualcomm’s AI Engine will support the Snapdragon 660, 820, and 835. The company’s latest 845 chipset will also support the new engine, and it’ll do so in addition to its own on-device AI processing.
The software side of things consist of the Qualcomm AI Engine which is made possible thanks to the Snapdragon Neural Processing Engine, Android Neural Networks API, and the Hexagon Neural Network. Qualcomm notes that many smartphone manufacturers have taken advantage of AI Engine components on Snapdragon mobile platforms to accelerate AI applications on their devices. These include Xiaomi, OnePlus, vivo, OPPO, Motorola, ASUS, ZTE, Nubia, Smartisan and Black shark, among some of which are planning to optimize AI applications using the AI Engine on future flagship smartphones using Snapdragon.
From a user standpoint, the new engine is said to cut down on the time it takes to do certain tasks on your phone, such as zeroing in on a subject when taking a photo. What’s more, battery life doesn’t suffer as much in the process. Voice and natural language processing are other areas billed as having reduced latency.
Adoption of on-device AI is growing in apps. Social media products such as Snapchat and Facebook use AI to power new masks and camera effects. The technology’s also being used for advanced biometric authentication, computer vision, and cybersecurity solutions. Qualcomm’s AI Engine is intended to accelerate the performance of these apps, allowing for more demanding on-device AI.
Qualcomm will be showcasing the AI tech at its booth at Mobile World Congress next week with an expected demonstration of Deep Portrait, Inner Magic, and Animoji from Face++.
