Last year Samsung unveiled world’s first commercial foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Fold. Despite facing many ups and downs, finally it got the success it deserves. And everyone’s expectations are high for it’s successor that’s unveiled today at UNPACKED event, the Galaxy Z Flip. This clamshell style foldable smartphone is the limelight of today’s event. Yes, it has clamshell design similar to Motorola RAZR 2019. So what Samsung did to differentiate it from RAZR 2019 and what’s inside the devices, let’s find out.
Design & Display:

Starting off with the design, which is the highlight of the device. This Galaxy Z Flip has a foldable display in a clamshell design. It makes the phone size small when folded, unlike Galaxy Fold which transforms into a tablet when open and into a phone when folded. The most important difference here as compared to other foldable smartphones are UTG (Ultra-Thin Glass). While all other foldable displays have a plastic display, this one has very thin glass that can fold. Also, it’s more scratch resistance than plastic. It has a very tall 22:9 aspect ratio with 6.7 inch Dynamic AMOLED display having Full HD+ resolution and 425 PPI. There’s a tiny 1.1 inch secondary AMOLED display on the outer side, to get a glimpse of notifications.
Camera:
Speaking about the camera, there’s nothing much exciting here because it only has a dual camera setup at the back. The primary camera is a 12MP sensor with f1.8 aperture, 1.4μm pixels, PDAF, and OIS. Then there’s 12MP ultra wide-angle lens with f2.2 aperture. Though there’s nothing much exciting about the hardware, because of a clamshell design, we can place the camera still without any mount and can click high exposure images and great time-lapse/hyper-lapse. Unlike the Galaxy S20 series, this one does not support 8K video recording, only up to 4k at 60fps is supported. On the front, there’s a single 10MP camera with f2.4 aperture, 1.24μm pixels, and PDAF.
Performance:

Now talking about the performance, this Samsung Galaxy Z Flip comes with 2019’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ chipset along with Adreno 640 GPU, because the optimization for foldable display takes a lot of time. It has 8GB RAM and 256GB of internal storage, with no expandable storage option. It runs on Android 10 out of the box with One UI 2.0 on top. This device packs only a 3,300mAh battery with only 15W charging. The fingerprint sensor is side mounted here. Stereo speakers present here are tuned by AKG. For connectivity it has 4G, dual band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, GPS, aptX HD, and Type-C port. It weighs at 183 grams, is 7.2mm thin when unfolded and 17.3mm thick when folded. It comes in Mirror Black, Mirror Purple, and Mirror Gold colour options.
Pricing & Availability:
- It’s priced at $1,380/€1,500 (₹98,380 approx.)
- It will be available in USA starting 14th February.
- No information about the availability in other regions.
So that’s all the information we have as of now. Personally I think in terms of design it’s better than Galaxy Fold, but in terms of specs, it somehow has downgrades. For example, the camera seems to be just fine, not very good. Also, the battery capacity is low and it doesn’t have fast charging support. Otherwise, it seems to be a very wonderful smartphone.
