Samsung’s first introduced “Always On Display” (AOD) with the launch of the S7 and S7 Edge. Ever since then the company has been working hard to update the “AOD” and keep adding new features. The latest AOD update adds Gif support for the last year Samsung flagships. The Galaxy S8, S8+, and Note8 will now be able to utilize animated GIF images that will show even when the display is dimmed in Always-On mode.
The Always-On Display till now was used to show a clock or an image when the Samsung devices were left idle. The update now offers the users an option to set either preloaded GIFs or one from their gallery on to the Always-On Screen display. The GIFs have a length limitation though. As a result, the users will have to trim their GIFs to the GIF lengths allowed for the Always-On Display.
However, there is a catch, this AOD update will only work on Samsung Flagship 2018 running Android Oreo(8.0) or higher. The GIF will play only once when the display is switched on, instead of playing in an infinite loop. This ensures that the GIFs do not eat up too much of battery.
GIF support isn’t a major feature, but it does allow users to add a bit more creativity and personalization to their smartphones. Previously, Always On allowed users to choose between pre-loaded images or their own custom images. GIF support simply takes this a step further by allowing users to add a bit of motion and life to an otherwise static screen.
To get the Always On Display update, open the Galaxy Apps store on your phone, tap the three-dot button on the top right, select My Apps, then select Update. Find and tap Always On Display in the list and hit the update button. Once you’ve updated, you will need to select the particular clock style that shows images on the display.
Not only will it not work on older versions of Android, but some users in the Android Police and XDA Developers comment sections have reported that the feature bricked their phones. And so we repeat — don’t try this out unless you are running Oreo.
