So the season of smartphone launches has started and surely from Xiaomi, the Mi 9 is the main highlight along with Mi 9 explorer edition. But Xiaomi has another smartphone at today’s launch for mid-range segment, and that is Mi 9 SE (Special Edition). It is the successor of last year’s Mi 8 SE. It has several latest pieces of tech within and a ‘first’ as well. So let’s dig into what this Mi 9 SE packs within.
Starting off with the display, it sports a 5.97 inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with 2340×1080 resolution, 432 ppi, and 19.5:9 aspect ratio. It follows the same route of water drop notch from Mi 9. All this is covered with Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5. It comes with Qualcomm’ Snapdragon 712 octa core processor clocked at 2.3Ghz, built on 10nm process and has Adreno 616 GPU. This Mi 9 SE is the first smartphone that has this Snapdragon 712 processor, so the engine of this device is purely new. It has 6GB of RAM with a storage option of 64GB and 128GB.
Talking about the camera, it also has a triple camera setup but the internals are not the same as Mi 9, slightly downgraded. It has 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor with f1.8 aperture and 0.8µm pixel size. It is exactly the same as Mi 9. The second camera is a 13MP ultra wide angle lens with f2.4 aperture. Lastly, the third camera is an 8MP telephoto lens with f/2.4 aperture. It can shoot 4K videos at 30fps, 1080p at 30,60 and 120fps, and 720p at 960fps. On the front, there is a single 20MP camera with f/2.0 lens and 0.9µm pixel size.

This Mi 9 SE comes with Android 9.0 Pie out of the box with MIUI 10 on top. It packs a 3070mAh battery with 18W fast charging support. It has the new Game Turbo feature which will maximize the CPU and GPU performance for better gaming without heating much. It also lacks the support of 3.5mm headphone jack. Regarding security, it has an in-display fingerprint sensor and AI face unlock. For connectivity, it has 4G, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, GPS, an infrared sensor, aptX HD and USB Type-C port. It weights at 155 grams and is 7.5mm thin. There are two color options for this device; Deep Grey, Blue Holographic Illusion, and Holographic Illusion color.

So that’s all the information we have as of now. I personally think that it offers some very good tech for it’s price, but most probably this device won’t launch outside China as the predecessors were also China exclusive.
