Apple unveiled watchOS 9 at the WWDC 2022 keynote last day. With the latest watchOS version, Apple Watch wearers will be able to better manage their health and fitness, as well as continuously monitor atrial fibrillation (AFib) and improve sleep tracking. Apple has released the Medications app alongside the introduction of watchOS 9. WatchOS 9 also contains new watch faces and an updated user experience. In order to cater to fitness enthusiasts, Apple has also introduced new training features. So, without further ado, let’s read the article to learn more.
WatchOS 9 Specifications
One of the most significant changes brought about by watchOS 9 is the increase of fitness and health tracking. The new watchOS release includes an AFib History function that tracks and monitors users who are in the state of atrial fibrillation over a specific time period – day or week. Users can also share a PDF of their AFib patterns to their doctors.
The watchOS 9 update also includes four new watch faces, including Playtime, as well as updates to Astronomy, Lunar, and Metropolitan. Similarly, complications on some of the most traditional watch faces, such as Utility, Simple, and Activity Analog, have been updated and modernised. The update also includes new features across all workout kinds, such as heart rate zones. Users may now cycle between easy-to-read Workout Views and look at various stats of different training regimens by using the Digital Crown on the Apple Watch. There is also a new custom workout mode that allows you to add alarms based on your workout.
Apple has also added a multi-sport exercise mode, which is said to employ sensor fusion on the Apple Watch to “identify when you finish one leg of your race and transition to the next so it can seamlessly switch between swimming, cycling, and running.”
The latest watchOS release also adds additional running form data to Workout Views, such as Stride Length, Ground Contact Time, and Vertical Oscillation.
Throughout the workout, the Apple Watch can provide users with fresh alerts such as pace, power, heart rate, and cadence. Kickboard detection has also been added as a new stroke type for Pool Swim workouts, which leverages sensor fusion on the Apple Watch to automatically recognise when users are swimming with a kickboard and categorise the stroke type in the workout summary alongside distance swam. Swimmers who use the Apple Watch can track their efficiency with a SWOLF score with watchOS 9.
In addition, Apple has begun displaying Fitness+ workouts on-screen assistance for workouts such as: Intensity for HIIT, Cycling, Rowing, and Treadmill; Strokes per Minute (SPM) for Rowing; Revolutions per Minute (RPM) for Cycling; and Incline for walkers and runners who usesTreadmill.
In addition to the improved workout experience, watchOS 9 adds Sleep Stages to the Apple Watch to improve sleep tracking. According to the business, the new feature can detect REM, Core, and Deep sleep periods.
Apple’s watchOS 9 includes the Pills app, which allows users to track their pills, vitamins, and supplements discreetly from their wrist. Users can also use the iPhone camera to scan a prescription label and upload the information to the preloaded software on the Apple Watch.
The new watchOS release includes a new Reminders app, which allows users to add or edit crucial parameters like date and time, location, tags, and notes. There’s also a new Calendar app that lets you create new events right from your Apple Watch.
Apple also stated at the keynote that “health data is secured on device and is not shared without your explicit permission.”
Apple Watch owners will be able to control compatible home gadgets from their wrists thanks to the addition of six new keyboard languages in watchOS 9. Furthermore, the new watchOS release has an enhanced watch face editor that allows users to adjust the background colour of watch faces.
The release of watchOS 9 paves the way for the new Apple Watch models, which are expected to arrive later this year with enhanced design and three different versions. Furthermore, the new watchOS version is intended to make the Apple Watch a strong competitor to smartwatches powered by Google’s Wear OS, which received a slew of changes at the I/O 2022 conference last month.
WatchOS 9 Availability
The watchOS 9 upgrade was initially made available to Apple Developer Program participants. The public beta of watchOS 9 will be available to users next month. This updated watchOS will be available as a free software upgrade for Apple Watch Series 4 or later when paired with an iPhone 8 or later and an iPhone SE (2020) or later running iOS 16. (somewhere in September).
