With the extensive rollout of 5G, three companies joined hands to bring the next big thing in communication. Oppo announced the successful conduction of a VoNR call on their phone with modified hardware powered by a Mediatek Dimensity 1000L chipset on a 5G SA network set-up by Ericsson in a press release.
VoNR stands for Voice over New Radio with New Radio as the official name of 5G networks. This makes it possible to place a call entirely from a 5G network. SA (standalone) works with its antennas, and doesn’t rely on any LTE network for connectivity, unlike NSA or Non-Standalone).
The press release stated that the VoNR offers a significant drop in latency, improved quality in audio and video resulting in “an elevated overall experience for users”. Andy Wu, VP and President of Software Engineering Business Unit at Oppo, said, “the company proactively works to accelerate large-scale commercialization of 5G”.
The test was conducted at Ericsson HQ in Stockholm, Sweden. The phones at both ends connected the call instantly ” and then seamlessly switched to a high-definition video call with a single keypress”, added the statement.
