Yesterday Motorola unveiled their new RAZR 2019 smartphone which carries the basic design of older RAZR phones, but is now a smartphone that too with foldable display. With this Motorola showcased a new type of foldable display i.e. clamshell design. Even though this is a complete new type of foldable, but Motorola is not alone here. Samsung is going to launch Galaxy W20 5G this month, which will have the same clamshell design. But seems like now Xiaomi is also going with this design.
A new patent design is being surfaced on CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Association) which reveals a new Xiaomi smartphone with foldable display. This display is none other than the clamshell design which we are talking about. As you can see from the image below, you will notice that even though the design is similar to Motorola RAZR 2019, but there are certain elements which are totally different here. First of all there’s no thick chin below the display. It’s just a thin bezel like any other 2019 smartphone. Then at the top there’s no notch as well, just a simple bezel with front camera and other things there.
That’s about the internal display, folding it and we can see a smaller secondary display outside. But right now this design looks a bit confusing as I doubt that the secondary display will work as a fully functional display or not? Maybe that’s just for showing time and notifications. Also at the back we can see dual camera setup along with LED flash, which is a good thing because RAZR 2019 only has single camera setup. Do note that Xiaomi submitted this patent design back in August 2018. So Xiaomi will make certain changes here & there.
So that’s all the information we have as of now. Now there are two types of foldable display, tablet/phone and clamshell. Samsung is smart here because they are adopting both types, whereas based on a teaser Xiaomi will bring third type where the display can be foldable by two times.
