Last month Samsung unveiled the first ever foldable smartphone, Galaxy Fold. It is the first and as of now only commercially ready smartphone with foldable display. That smartphone was the attraction that night, despite got unveiled along with Galaxy S10 series. It’s a smartphone with 4.3-inch display that becomes into 7.3-inch display when the phone is unfolded. Samsung said that they will start sales from April end, but didn’t mention the regions. Today we got to know one country and that’s India.
During the launch event of Galaxy S10 series in India, DJ Koh (President & CEO of IT & Mobile Communication Division at Samsung) said that they are going to launch the Galaxy Fold in India. He said that Samsung would like to manufacture this foldable smartphone in India to reduce the cost, but as the production of Galaxy Fold is not a mass production Samsung decided to manufacture all devices at one plant. Regarding availability of this device in India, he said –
“Indian market is, I clearly said, most important market — not only investment and everything, my long-term commitment is towards the market. In this market, why will I not deliver my newest technology innovation? Yes, I will do,”
He didn’t mention any ETA for the launch, but we assume that it will happen sometime in late April or May, along with other regions. On Galaxy S10 5G he said that as soon as India will get appropriate 5G networks, they would launch Galaxy S10 5G in India. They are working with carriers here in India, but all depends on how early Indian carrier networks will bring 5G networks.
So that’s all the information we have as of now. There is also a rumor around which suggests that Samsung is currently planning for two more smartphones with foldable display. It will be interesting to see whether those two will be priced aggressively or not. Well, what are your thoughts on Galaxy Fold launch in India and other foldable Samsung smartphones?
