Last week, Vivo took the wraps off its concept phone named “Vivo Apex”. Initially showed off as a concept phone at the MWC 2018, Vivo Apex has finally launched in China with an All Screen design. Along with a drool-worthy design, the phone also sports a Half-Screen Fingerprint Scanning Technology, which means you can practically unlock the smartphone just by putting your finger anywhere on the bottom-half portion of the screen.
The extremely sleek looking smartphone has a 91 percent Screen-to-body ratio which is very thin with almost no bezel, sporting a 5.99 inch Oled display with COF technology. Under the hood, the device is powered by Snapdragon 845 CPU.
Vivo already has a device with an under-display fingerprint scanner named the “Vivo X20 Plus UD” showcased at CES 2018 but the scanner was only available at one spot on the screen. However, in “Apex” the entire lower half of the screen is dedicated as a fingerprint scanner making it faster in some ways and more accurate for detection. The screen also supports multi fingerprint recognition.
Side bezels are only 1.8mm and a bottom bezel of 4.3mm makes it a true design-centric phone. The thickness of the phone is also just 7.8mm, which will give a premium feel for the users of the phone. All the sensors are placed below the screen hidden away behind the screen.
Since the phone almost has no bezels, the front camera of the phone is hidden on the top edge which can be raised when required, making it one of the most interesting features of the phone. It only takes 0.8 seconds to come up from the top and goes back in once you are done taking selfies or video calls.

The dual back camera supports HDR and has a dynamic range of up to 14 EV. Vivo uses pretty high tech technology involving AI algorithms, character optimizations, natural tones, multi-frame preferences to power this camera which will be in turn make up for high-quality pictures.

The SoundCasting Technology on this phone screen doubles up as an earpiece and a loudspeaker, as it produces vibrations through the display to emit audio, eliminating the need for speakers and earpiece, providing a notch-less smartphone with smaller bezels. The phone also offers a Hi-Fi audio experience thanks to System in Packages (SIP) technology. It features three amplifiers and a DAC.
The Chinese manufacturer has not yet revealed information on RAM, storage, front and rear camera configurations and battery capacity of the APEX smartphone. For now, we know that the “APEX” will sport the flagship Snapdragon 845 Chipset. Vivo Apex is said to start mass-production of the device by mid-2018.
The Bezel-less design which was first showcased by the Chinese giant Xiaomi with the “Mi Mix” has become a trend now. Vivo has almost perfected the design and will be interesting to see how the device fares with consumers and whether it will create the buzz with its drool-worthy design. The pricing of the device would also play a major role once the device will be available obviously in China first. Hopefully, the device will make its way to India as well (Fingers Crossed).
