The Japanese electronics giant Sony does not have a good time in smartphones but the company is developing some innovative technologies for various products. Well, today the company has announced something special for smartphone cameras, as Sony announced a 2×2 on-chip lens for Quad Bayer sensors, which promises better autofocus performance.
With the new technology, smartphone brands can offer its camera module with improved autofocus performance, especially in the low light environment. The new setup is based on Phase Detection autofocus and that will focus pixels whose output is not part of the final image and that means it will reduce the coverage.
Moreover, the new 2×2 technology will allow using all the pixels as part of the focus detection system and this will find the solution of the low horizontal detail negatively affects on the performance of the autofocus system.
The company also claims that the new setup will improve the light gathering efficiency when pixel binning is in the use. Unfortunately, there is no information about the timeline of this new technology in smartphones but we believe that the company will implement the same very soon.
