From past one year, we are hearing about the UPI-based payment integration into the world’s most favourite instant messaging application WhatsApp. And we also came through various reports, which told us the various improvements of the new and the biggest feature which the Facebook-owned instant messaging application is going to roll out in India. And we also seen the feature leaked in last year. In last month, we updated a report, which suggested that the new payment feature of WhatsApp will be available in February. Well, we are now in the month of February and today we got to know that WhatsApp will make the feature official very soon.
The UPI (Unified Payments Interface) payment system of WhatsApp which is also called as WhatsApp Payments has started to test in the beta testers, and the feature is testing on both the Android as well as the iOS platform. But the feature will not be available to all the users who have enrolled in the beta program, as the company is testing the feature only with a selected number of users.
With this feature, users can able to send and receive money within the WhatsApp via the UPI-based payment method and with the introduction of this feature in the instant messaging application, people can now avoid keeping other application which they used to send and receive money. Because as these days everyone has the WhatsApp, then why will you keep other applications. And from WhatsApp’s point of view, they can now engage their platform even more because the digital payment and transaction have increased a lot in the country especially after the demonetization in 2016. Moreover, the company recently announced that they have 200 Million active users in India. So, the numbers of the digital transaction will definitely go to high.
How to use this feature
As the is based on UPI, the first step is linking your bank account which is already linked to the UPI. You will see a list of banks in the WhatsApp from which you can select your bank. Users will also see a shortcut to ‘Payment’ inside the chat when you tap on the attachment icon.
Currently, the service is still under testing and that’s why you won’t be able to see the feature. So, let’s hope that the company will roll out the public version of WhatsApp Payments very soon. Moreover, I also expect that the WhatsApp Payments will also come up with lots of freebies like vouchers just like the Google Tez which provides a scratch card for every transaction since it was launched in last year.
